In a compact bedroom, it's essential to make the most of the space available, even when it seems challenging. From building cupboards up high to utilising eaves down low, here are some smart ways to tuck in clothes storage.

Make the most of angles
Awkward eaves and pitched roofs can be an ideal place for storage, as they aren't really usable for anything else. Have a carpenter install shelves and cupboards to your exact requirements to make the most of the space.

Be creative with your stairs
In a room with a mezzanine sleeping space like this one, the stairs could be the ideal spot for some storage. Here, each tier has been fitted with a drawer, while the longer area at the side has become a wardrobe.

There are numerous ways you could design an area like this, so it's important to hire a good joiner who can run through all the options with you.

Divide and conquer
In a really small space, you could join two rooms by removing the wall in-between. Then divide the two areas by adding a half-height wall, which can also house your wardrobe, as in this inspiring design.

Removing a wall is a major job, however, so speak to a reputable builder and check out Building Regulations before you go ahead.

Go vertical
Make the most of all available height and build cupboards all the way to the ceiling. If your ceiling is particularly high, you can use a rolling library ladder to reach the upper cupboards, as these homeowners have done.

Paint the wardrobes in the same colour as the walls and ceiling to prevent the room from feeling closed in. If your cabinets have dark interiors, be sure to install lighting, otherwise you might struggle to find things on dark winter mornings.

Utilise the corridor
If you have a wide corridor or hallway, make use of the space by turning it into a walk-through wardrobe.

In a space that's quite open, or frequently used, it's best to have doors fitted on the wardrobes to protect against dust and cooking smells. However, if the space is between your bedroom and en suite bathroom, you could have them open for easy access.

If you don't want your desk space to interfere with a relaxing sleep, look into having a sliding door fitted that can be pulled across when the work area is not in use.

Build into the eaves
Loft rooms often feel small due to the sloping ceiling, but the floor space is usually bigger than you'd think. Build units back into the lower pitch of the roof to get plenty of storage in an otherwise unusable space.

Here, the homeowners have built in drawers, but you could have pull-out, low-level hanging rails instead – look out for angled ones designed for sloping spaces.

Work around the window
A wall with a window is often an unusable space in terms of storage. This is particularly true with a low window, or one with little space for a freestanding wardrobe at the side.

Maximise length
Long, narrow rooms are particularly difficult to furnish. Make the most of the length by installing a room-dividing piece of furniture. This shelving unit works as a bedside table and bookcase on one side, while the other side could provide space for a wardrobe area.
